What Is a DOT Annual Inspection?
Under FMCSR Part 396.17, every commercial motor vehicle operating in interstate commerce must receive a periodic (annual) inspection. This inspection must be performed by a qualified inspector — and the documentation must be retained on the vehicle at all times.
Failing to maintain current DOT inspection records is a violation that can result in out-of-service orders, fines up to $16,000 per violation, and increased CSA scores — directly impacting your insurance rates and FMCSA safety rating.
DOT Inspection Levels Explained
FMCSA defines six levels of DOT inspection. We perform all applicable levels at your fleet location in DFW. Here's what each one covers:
North American Standard Inspection
The most comprehensive roadside inspection. Covers both the driver and vehicle — documents, physical condition, brake systems, coupling devices, exhaust, fuel systems, lights, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, and windshield wipers.
- Driver's license & medical certificate
- Hours of service / ELD records
- Brake systems (service, parking, air/hydraulic)
- Coupling devices & cargo securement
- Exhaust system integrity
- Fuel system (no leaks, proper mounting)
- Lights — all required lighting
- Steering mechanism
- Suspension components
- Tires, wheels & rims
- Windshield & wipers
What Our Inspectors Check
Our FMCSA-certified inspectors follow the North American Standard Inspection Program (NASIP) checklist on every annual DOT inspection for your DFW commercial fleet.
Brake Systems
Air brakes, hydraulic brakes, service & parking brakes, brake lining thickness, brake adjustment, hoses and connections.
Steering & Suspension
Steering linkage, power steering fluid, front axle condition, spring suspension, shock absorbers, and torque arm bushings.
Lighting & Electrical
All required lights — headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, clearance lights, hazard flashers, and marker lights.
Tires & Wheels
Tread depth (4/32" drive, 2/32" other), inflation pressure, sidewall condition, rim integrity, lug nuts, and wheel seals.
Cargo Securement
Tie-down straps, chains, binders, blocking, bracing, and all securement hardware per FMCSR Part 393.
Driver Documents
Commercial driver license, medical certificate, ELD/HOS records, driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIR), and registration.
Engine & Exhaust
Fuel system leaks, exhaust system routing and integrity, engine mounts, belts, fluid levels, and battery condition.
Coupling Devices
Fifth wheel condition, kingpin wear, air/electrical connections, safety chains, pintle hooks, and rear impact guards.
Full Fleet Compliance
Management for DFW Operators
Staying compliant with FMCSA regulations isn't just about passing inspections — it requires ongoing vehicle maintenance records, driver qualification management, ELD compliance, and proactive CSA score monitoring. We help DFW fleets stay audit-ready year-round.
ELD & Hours of Service (HOS)
Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate compliance under FMCSA 49 CFR Part 395. We verify ELD equipment function and HOS records during inspections — catching violations before an audit does.
Driver Qualification Files (DQF)
Properly maintained DQFs are required for every CDL driver. We help fleet operators understand what records must be kept — application, MVR, medical certificate, road test, and annual review.
Drug & Alcohol Testing Programs
DOT-mandated drug & alcohol testing under FMCSA Part 382. Pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and return-to-duty testing program compliance.
CSA Score Management
Your Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) score directly affects your insurance premiums and FMCSA safety rating. Roadside violations increase your BASIC scores — our inspections catch issues first.
Vehicle Maintenance Records
FMCSR Part 396.3 requires systematic vehicle inspection and maintenance records for each CMV. We provide documentation for every service performed and help you build a proper maintenance file.
USDOT & MC Number Compliance
Operating authority compliance — verified USDOT number display, active MC authority, insurance filing requirements (MCS-90), and biennial updates with FMCSA.
What Happens When You're Not Compliant
FMCSA doesn't give warnings — out-of-service orders happen at roadside inspections, audits, and weigh stations. The consequences impact your bottom line immediately and your insurance rates for years.

DOT Inspection & Fleet Compliance Questions
Everything DFW fleet operators need to know about DOT inspections, FMCSA regulations, and commercial vehicle compliance in Texas.
Under FMCSR Part 396.17, commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce must receive an annual inspection (every 12 months). The inspection record must be retained on the vehicle. Texas intrastate vehicles are subject to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) commercial vehicle regulations, which follow similar intervals. Wilder Fleets provides certified annual inspections for both interstate and intrastate fleets throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
